Kate was born and raised in Tell City and moved to Louisville @ 1895 where she worked as a dressmaker and where she met the widower Anthony Leopold, one of the Louisville Lifesavers. Kate told her family that she was married to Tony Leopold in 1896, but no marriage record is on file in Kentucky or Indiana. Kate and Tony had 2 children together. Her daughter Antoinette (Annette) was partially raised by Kate's mother Josephine in Tell City. Kate's son, James born in 1905 was given up for adoption to friends and next door neighbors George and Susan Chambers. Kate and the Chambers family remained in contact through at least 1942, and Kate was known as 'Aunt Kate' to her biological son James, and to her grandson James Chambers Jr. The photo of Kate with glasses and hat - taken about 1938 in Tell City - includes her grandson, James Chambers Jr.

Kate had a short term marriage to William Mundel of Tell City who she knew growing up. William and his siblings were orphans and Kate's father, Henry Ludwig who was a prominent businessman, Justice of the Peace and Mayor of Tell City was named to be the guardian of the Mundel children in 1874.

In 1911 Kate married George Bowles. In the 1920's George and Kate moved from Louisville to her hometown of Tell City. George worked as a River Watchman and Kate ran the Boarding house known as the 'Bowles Homestead' on 7th Street in Tell City.

Some years (probably around 1950) after George passed away in 1944, Kate moved to Delaware to live with/near her daughter Annette and her husband Jerry Nash.

Kate is buried in Delaware, but her name and dates are also carved into the tombstone in the Greenwood Cemetery in Tell City, Indiana of her husband George Bowles, very close to the Ludwig plot where her parents Henry and Josephine Ludwig are buried.
