Omar was my Dad's mother, Luella Haun Donovan's, youngest brother.

Luella knew hardship, raising 8 children, during the depression, after her husband died. Uncle Omar helped his sister's family as much as he could. My dad remembered Christmases when there would have been nothing, had it not been for his Uncle Omar's kindness and generosity. Even such items as a new toothbrush or a new pair of bib overalls were appreciated by a child who otherwise would not have had them.

Uncle Omar married Anne Peters, a widow, when he was around 40 years old. They had no children.

After Anne's death and in his later years, Uncle Omar lived in an apartment over top of a store in Winchester, Virginia. I remember him as a perky little man who was always happy to see company come.

He had a vegetable garden outside his kitchen window on the rooftop of the adjoining building and, as a child, I thought how neat it was to see him climb through the kitchen window to pluck tomatoes for us to take home with us.

He had a hard life and I hope he's resting peacefully now.
