Luella Haun was a descendant of sturdy German pioneer stock and her ancestors helped to settle Shenandoah County, Va. She was only 38 years old when her husband, Scott, died from pneumonia, leaving her with 8 children to raise alone, during the depression. After losing the family home in Edinburg, Va., she moved with her children to nearby Front Royal, to live with her brother, John.

She was an excellent seamstress and supported her family with her custom sewing and alterations. She also made crocheted rag rugs which she sold and which were very popular. In her later years, she developed a tremor in her hands from Parkinson's disease but did not let it deter her ability to crochet ... she used the motion of the tremor as the rhythm for the motion of the hook. She was a truly remarkable woman.
