Clarence R. Johnson, age 85, formerly of Menomonie passed away peacefully on April 24, 2008, surrounded by family.
He was born on Oct. 8, 1922, to Emil and Mathilda Johnson of Downsville. He retired from the U.S. Navy after 20 years. He served aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Lexington, and was a plank member. Other stations included Pearl Harbor. He was a barber on Main Street in Menomonie. He loved to fish, hunt and dance. He did carpentry that included barns, houses and furniture.
He is survived by a daughter, Marie L. Gwin of Roberts; granddaughters, Lisa (Jorden) Helgeson; great-granddaughters, Sara and Alison Nordgren; grandson, Richard (Michelle) Amundson; great-granddaughters, Megan and Nicole; grandson, Robert (Dana) Amundson; grandson, Joseph (Dawn) Gefroh; great-grandchildren, Jacob and Leah; sisters, Sofie Selchert of Castlewood, S.D., Dorothy Wiedman of Onalaska; brothers, Marion G. (Jeanne) Johnson of Menomonie and Lloyd G. (Florence) Johnson of Eau Claire.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Myrtle Johnston; brothers, John Watland, Herman Watland, William Watland, Alfred Watland, Elmer Watland and Lester Johnson.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, at New Hope Lutheran Church in Downsville.
