Professional Billiards Player. Born in Cornwall, New York, he was an internationally renowned carom billiards champion. From 1906 to 1952, he won 51 world titles including scoring 2,000 contiguous points in straight rail, 622 points in 18.2 balkine, run of 25 points in three cushion and made a tournament average of 1.333, a world record at that time, but since broken. Hoppe was the only pocket billiards player to ever put on an exhibition in the White House, playing for President William Taft in 1911. After winning his 51st world title in 1952, he retired from professional play and became a goodwill ambassador for the sport. He died at age 71 in Miami, Florida and was posthumously inducted into the Billiard Congress of America Hall of Fame in 1966.
