John Ives Hartman, 87, of 1419 Ridge Road, former owner of the Barr-Hurst bookstore, died Wednesday at Lancaster General Hospital. Hartman was active in Lancaster civic and church circles. Hartman owned the Barr-Hurst store for 11 years until his retirement in 1958. Prior to that, he was president of Follmer, Clogg & Co. He also was employed by the Office of Production Management, Washington, DC, and was vice president of the Bearings Co. of America. He was educated at the Yeates School, Lancaster, and the Lawrenceville School, Lawrenceville, NJ, and earned a bachelor of arts degree at Princeton University. He graduated magna cum laude from Princeton and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. A member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Lancaster, Hartman was active in the church at the diocesan and national levels. He was a life vestryman and a rector's warden at St. John's and was a delegate to the annual diocesan conventions for many years. At the national level, he was a deputy to eight triennial general conventions and was a member of the program and budget committee. Hartman was also very active in Lancaster civic organizations. He served as a director and vice president of the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce, was vice president and president of the Lancaster Manufacturers Association and was director of Lancaster General Hospital. He was also active in the Lancaster Community Chest and the Lancaster County Foundation and was a member of the Hamilton Club. He was the husband of Loneita Eckert Straub Hartman. The couple observed their 50th wedding anniversary in 1966. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Herbert W. and Della Breneman Hartman. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, John I. Jr., Lancaster, and Robert B. II, Bridgeport, Conn., two daughters, Phyllis H., wife of Richard L. Youngquist, Lancaster, Helen H., wife of Kenneth W. Gemmill, Jamison, 11 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Also surviving is one sister, Mrs. W.R. Burt, Lancaster.
