"On March 22, 1904, Merton Edwin Oliver was born to Julia (Ferguson) Oliver and Clarence Howard Oliver on the farm that was homesteaded by his grandfather, Thomas Bruce Oliver in 1869. Merton lived there with his parents, his brother Bruce, and sister Mary Lucille. He attended school at Canton West Side School in 1911. In the spring of 1913 the Oliver family moved to Mott, ND Mr. Ben Osvog helped them move in an immigrant freight car. While in North Dakota, the Olivers lived in a sod house. Merton's sister Bernice was born at Bismark. In the spring of 1919 the family moved back to Lincoln County. Merton lived with his parents and helped with the farming until the spring of 1937 when he rented the Carl Anderson farm. On June 1, 1937, Merton was married to Myrtle Torberson at Worthing. Myrtle was born to Oleana (Sundvold) Torberson and Bernard Torberson on April 19, 1907. She graduated from Canton High School and a two-year normal course at Canton Lutheran Normal. She taught rural schools in Lincoln and Turner Counties for ten years. Merton and Myrtle lived on the Anderson farm and in 1949 bought the 240 acres from the estate. Their two children Merlyn Eugene and Margaret Ann were both born on the home farm. They attended Sunnyside School District #17 and graduated from Canton High School. Merton and Myrtle bought a home and moved into Canton in 1976 when Merlyn and family took over the farming. Merlyn is also farming 80 acres of the Oliver farmstead which has always been farmed by an Oliver. Merton & Myrtle celebrated Golden Wedding on May 31, 1987.
