Verna L. Flagel, a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on February 10, 2024, in Dubuque, Iowa, at the age of 69.

Born on September 7, 1954, in Maquoketa, Iowa.

Verna's life was one of dedication, service, and love.

Verna attended Andrew schools before graduating from Monticello High School in 1972. Her pursuit of knowledge led her to Scott Community College, where she studied accounting, a field that would define her professional life.

On April 3, 1976, she married the love of her life, Steven Flagel, in Maquoketa, where they began their life's journey together.

Verna's career was marked by her commitment to her community and her profession. She started working at the Green Mill Café in Maquoketa, then moved on to serve the Andrew Community Schools. Her career path took her to Sherri's Tax Service before she took the entrepreneurial leap to own and operate Country Hill Accounting for five years. Verna's final professional chapter was with Maquoketa State Bank, where she worked diligently until her retirement in May of 2023.

Beyond her professional endeavors, Verna was deeply involved in her community. She was a proud member of the Eagles Club in Maquoketa and the National Association of Tax Preparers. Her passion for helping others shone brightly through her 20-year tenure as the co-chairperson for the American Cancer Society – Jackson County Relay for Life. Verna also played an integral role in the Emeline School Restoration project and dedicated many years as the secretary for the Bridgeport Cemetery Association.

Verna's interests were as varied as they were heartfelt. She found joy in the simple pleasures of life, such as reading, solving puzzles, and tending to her garden. Her dogs were a source of endless happiness, and she cherished the time spent with her beloved pets.

Her family was the cornerstone of her life.

Verna was preceded in death by her parents, Owen Leroy and Sibyl Jane (Carpenter) Wallroff, her brothers Alva Shady, Irvin Wallroff, Vurtis Wallroff, and her sisters Carole Dodds and Marilyn Earles.

A Gathering of Family and Friends Celebrating Verna's life will be held from 5 to 7 P.M., Monday, February 19, 2024, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. A private graveside service and burial will be held at Bridgeport Cemetery, rural Maquoketa. Cremation rites have been accorded.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society or the Jackson County Humane Society.
