A beautiful and much loved angel has left this Earth a better place in the time she was here.
Marjorie Elaine Dowty passed away Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003, from complications of cancer. She was 81.
She was born Aug. 12, 1922, in Scottsbluff, Neb.
She married Norman H. Dowty in 1940. They had four loving children. Elaine was a stay-at-home mother and cherished every minute she could spend with her children. After her husband retired, they bought and ran the Montgomery Ward stores in Moscow and Pullman from 1981 to 1985 along with the help of their sons, Lynn and Jim. In 1988, they opened D&D Value Center, a used furniture store, which they operated until 2002.
Elaine greatly enjoyed meeting and talking to the variety of people who frequented the store. She greatly enjoyed traveling and was able to visit many places throughout the United States and Europe.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman, in 1995; her parents; a brother; and a sister.
She is survived by a son, Lynn D. Dowty of Moscow; a daughter, Janet E. Duncan and her husband, Bruce, of Olympia; sons James N. Dowty and his wife, Phyllis, of Beaverton, Ore., and Leon J. Dowty and his wife, Barbara, of Reno, Nev.; a sister, Grace Carlson of Scottsbluff; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She never let adversity slow her down or backed away from a challenge. She was a fighter of world-class caliber; this was manifested in her surviving four major cancer surgeries over a 25-year period. She was a very loving mother who raised a very close family. She will be truly missed by all who knew her. BYE MOM.
The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society.
Private services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Short's Funeral Chapel in Moscow.
