Obituary
Mr. James Garner, son of James and Mary Ann (Goff) Roberts, was born on the 5th day of June 1832, and died on the 28th day of November 1910.
He was married three times, his first wife, Margaret Graham, bore him two children, one of whom, James E., still lives. His second wife, Mary Roberts, bore him one child, Louis Roberts, who lives at Dead Lake. His last wife, Mary Jane Lyons, bore him ten children, all of whom are still living.
Bro. Roberts was a kind father, a loving husband and a devoted friend and neighbor. He always looked on the bright side of life, and was seldom known to be despondent or discouraged.
No one of us through one month ago, when his youngest brother, Thomas A., passed away, that his end was so near.
Bro. Roberts had lived for a good many years in Vancleave. Last spring some of his people urged him to move to Ocean Springs, so he sold his place and moved, though he was never satisfied. He longed to be among his children, in and around Vancleave, and as often as possible he came out with the mail-rider to visit his children and grandchildren.
He left to mourn his departure from this life, two brothers, several sisters, a widow and twelve children, with a host of grandchildren and friends.
He joined the Methodist Episcopal Church South, at old Mt. Pleasant, in 1882, Rev. J.H. Holland receiving him in. He professed conversion from sin unto salvation by faith in 1905, at New Prospect Campmeeting, while Rev. J.T. Abney was pastor.
Bro. Roberts had come out to spend Thanksgiving with some of his children, he became very sick while here, and suffered for several days. He was in the home of his daughter, Mrs. J.W. Taylor, and everything was done that could be done for his recovery, but the end came;
the brittle thread was broken--the death angel had come and severed his soul from his body and carried him to his long, long home.
Dear loved ones and friends, weep not as one who has no hope, for there is a hope that you shall see him again beyond this vale of tears.
