Mary Elizabeth French and David "Dave" Cooper Calhoun
married 06/29/1955 in Harrisonville, Cass County, Missouri

Though Mary married late in life she enjoyed a 17-year marriage before David died in his eighties. After their marriage in 1955, they embarked on a honeymoon, which took them to Egypt and the Mediterranean. This adventure kept them in tales for many years to come. Dave, who had been widowed by two previous wives, had two sons by his first wife Ethel V Adcock Calhoun (a cousin of Walter William French). The sons, John Adcock Calhoun and Charles David Calhoun, were raised by other families after their mother died when Charles was a baby. When Dave married his second wife Gertie May Adamson Calhoun, they took the two boys back and made a family. By the time Dave married Mary, these sons were raised with families themselves. Mary was a far more independent and opinionated woman than Dave had known before. This kindled the respect and at times lively debate of an egalitarian marriage. Mary always held that it was not her husband's province to approve of her actions or have say regarding her money. This often caused him consternation in the 500-resident town of Montrose. However, Mary made her own place in people's hearts and minds.
