Peter Swisher married Eleanor (surname unknown) and fathered Carson (b. @1848), Theodore (b. @1849), Mary (b. @1854), Amanda (b. @1856), Peter (b. @1860), and Clara (b. @1863). In 1850, he was a laborer living in Wheatfield Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania, in 1860 was a miner living in Logan Township, Blair County, and in 1864 claimed to be a Franklin County resident. He stood 5' 7" tall and had black hair and brown eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg on March 19, 1864, as a private with Co. D, 148th Pennsylvania Infantry. On June 1, 1865, he transferred to Co. H, 53rd Pennsylvania Infantry, to complete his term of service and honorably discharged with his company on June 30, 1865.

By 1870, he was again living in Perry County, this time in Penn Township. He died at age 72-7-2, the figure used to calculate the accompanying date of birth.
