June Plunkett Poe, 99, of Roanoke, Va., passed from this life on Wednesday, December 20, 2023.

June was preceded in death by her parents, Moss A. and Billie Puett Plunkett; brother, Moss A. Jr. of Roanoke, VA; her beloved husband, Dr. William D. "Bill" Poe of Roanoke, VA; and son, John Dunlap Poe of Roanoke, VA.

June was brought up in church and developed a deep and examined faith that was expressed in acts of service, acceptance, and love for others. Her scriptural life verse was Micah 6:8, "What does the Lord require of you? To act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God." She lived this out fully with a boundless capacity for joy.

With her compass of faith, June forged her educational and professional paths. She was an intellectually curious person throughout her life, both reflecting and fueling formal education that began with homeschooling alongside her brother in their remote country home in Roanoke County, VA.

Following graduation from Randolph Macon Woman's College in 1947, she earned a master's degree in social work at Smith College in 1949. Truly a "woman before her time," June entered professional life and built a career as a clinical social worker spanning decades in various fields of practice including child psychiatry, medical social work, and macro advocacy for older adults.

In retirement, she applied her expertise to countless roles at church, local communities, and most notably by being a tireless champion for persons living with mental illness. In that capacity, she rose to leadership appointments on local and state advisory boards and presented testimony before the United States Congress.

While June was fully committed to her profession, her deepest devotion was to the family she made with Bill. She drew her greatest delight and meaning from her roles as wife and mother. She cherished her marriage and was a true "helpmeet" in Bill's pioneering work to establish Geriatrics as a medical specialty and early adoption of Medicare. As a mother, she marveled at how remarkably different her five children were from one another and nurtured each with unique wisdom, patience, and an abundance of good humor.

Shortly before her death, June reflected on her nearly 100 years of life. She expressed, "I'm so grateful I had the opportunity to be a part of many historic moments and interesting fields, but the greatest experience was to have relationships with so many people who gave me their love."

A Memorial Celebration will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 6, 2024, at Brandon Oaks Retirement Community, 3804 Brandon Ave. SW, Roanoke, VA 24018. All who care to attend are welcome to come and rejoice in her homegoing.
