Lily was born March 4, 1922, at her Grandma Amy Nealeigh's home in Cornell, Nebraska to Jasper and Maude Blanche Cole. She was the second child having an older sister, Gladys, and younger siblings Elbert, Roy, Veda and Louise. Lily attended Cornell School walking 2 miles unless it was bad weather when her father drove her in a car. She graduated from Trenton, Nebraska High School in 1940. She attended Kearney College for 6 weeks to get her teacher's certificate and taught in one room country schools 1940-1946.

They started corresponding in January 1942 until October 1945 and finally met after Willis' discharge. They were married in Oberlin, Kansas on August 5, 1946, and settled in Lyman, Nebraska. They had two children, Virginia and Willis Ray. In 1959 they moved to their farm in Goshen County, Wyoming. Lily worked as a bookkeeper at the Chester B. Brown Co. in Lyman from 1955-1977.
