Wm. BARKLEY, prominent Virginia citizen and well known Cass county land owner, passed away at this home in this city Saturday morning, December 4, after an illness of only about two weeks duration. His death cam as a shock to his many friends as only about two weeks ago he was about town. Mr. BARKLEY was a man of excellent character and through his generosity his church received much financial help, as well as several needy families.
Wm. BARKLEY was born in Albany, Mo., April 14, 1844 and died at his home in this city Saturday, December 4, 1915, aged 71 years. He came to Illinois when 31 years of age and May 7, 1871 he was married to Miss Nannie MCDONALD. They lived on the home farm until 1885 when they moved to their present home in Virginia. Mr. BARKLEY united with the Methodist Episcopal church in 1898 and that event marked a complete change in his life. For a number of years he has been a member of the official board of his church and has been foremost in rendering financial help. Fraternally he was a member of the M.W.A. and the local order of A.F. & A.M. He leaves to mourn him, his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Pearl BLEY and baby of Beardstown and friends without number.
Funeral services were Tuesday afternoon at 2 o' clock from the Methodist Episcopal church, Rev. C.F. JUVINALL officiating and interment was made in Walnut Ridge cemetery. The members of the official board of the Methodist Episcopal church acted as pallbearers and the church choir sang "O Happy Day," "Nearer My God to Thee" and "Jesus Lover or My Soul."
