A few days ago the world lost an unparalleled wife, mother and grandmother. Virginia Tibbetts Smith, originally of Peterson, Iowa, was born the third of six children. She loved cooking, flowers, photography, painting, bowling, sports - especially the Nationals - and Christmas, but most of all her family. Probably the most self-sacrificing person you could have ever met. John 15:13 says "No one has greater love than to lay down his own life for his friends," and she lived that every day of her life. She loved to care for others; and if you were ever around her you could feel that love.
She graduated from La Porte City High School and moved to the Washington, DC area to work for the FBI. That is where she met the love of her life, Harold D. Smith. They remained faithfully married for 73 years until her departure from us. In their earlier years together, they travelled across the country until planting their roots here in the DC area where Harold worked as an agent for the Bureau and Virginia continued the most important job of them all: motherhood. Together they raised two sons, David B. and Daniel B. Smith. She is survived by her husband Harold, her son Dan, her daughter-in-law, Glennda Smith and their three children Adam, Jacob, and Elijah, and her daughter-in-law, Carol Smith, as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family members that will miss her greatly. She was preceded in death by her oldest son, David, and her siblings, Betty, Beverly, Bonnie, Donna and Melvin Tibbetts.
Services will be held on Friday, February 25, 2022 at Mountcastle Turch Funeral Home located at 4143 Dale Blvd., Dale City, VA 22193. Visitation will begin at 10am with services to follow at 11am. Those that wish to join the family at the burial are welcome to follow us to Fairfax Memorial Gardens for a 1pm ceremony at 9902 Braddock Road, Fairfax, VA, 22032.
