He married in 1926, was a member of the St. Anthony's church and Knights of Columbus. My grandmother was Mrs. Vance Salmans--Sue. In another newspaper clipping owned by Sue, it indicates that C.B. Hertel drowned in Sawlog creek Thursday, July 27 at about 11 a.m. when a tractor he was operating plunged over the creek bank, pinnin him under the tractor. Mr. Hertel and son James were using the tractor to pull driftwood from the creek and clean out the channel. Mr. Hertel had started up the bank, five or six feet high, but with a steep grade, when the tractor began slipping backward. James called to his father to jump but the father evidently believed he could brake the machine to a stop. The brake failed to hold, however, and the tractor toppled off the bank and over on its side, crushing him beneath it. James immediately raced for help, and within a short time nearby farmers had gathered at the site of the accident and tractors were used to pull the overturned tractor out and remove the body from mud and water in the creek.
The sad accident cast a gloom over the entire neighborhood.
Mr. Hertel was born December 9, 1899 in Tiptonville, New Mexico. When he was three years old the family moved to Hanston with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. George F. Hertel, to the farm on which the accident occurred.
October 18, 1926, Mr. Hertel married Miss Katherine Blottner of Garden City. He was a loyal member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, Hanston, a member of the church committee, and the Knights of Columbus and active in community affairs.
His son, Cpl Fred, was killed in action in Korea January 27, 1952, and another son, Paul, died in infancy.
It goes on to list the survivors which are the same as the obit above.
Services were in the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Hanston Monday morning and burial was in the Catholic Cemetery west of Hanston.
