Thomas Messler Obituary
Thomas (Tom) Raymond Messler passed away on the evening of Sunday, November 26, 2023, unexpectedly, at North Bay Medical Center, Fairfield, CA. He was 76 years old. Family and friends were at his side. Tom is the son of the late Florence Myrtle (Hoard) and Carrol Raymond Messler. Also preceding him in death was his late wife, Thelma (d. 10-18-2002). Tom is survived by a daughter, Melissa M. Messler (Baker), her husband Jeffrey Baker, grandchildren Mark and Mathew Baker of Vacaville, CA, current wife Sandra K. Messler (Castillo) of Dixon, CA, and stepdaughter Kaitlyn T. Castillo, currently serving in the United States Air Force, and many other family members and friends. Tom was born in San Francisco, August 9, 1947. He attended schools in Concord and West Pittsburgh, CA. His family moved to Pleasant Hill where he attended Pleasant Hill High School from 1961-1965 taking college prep courses. He received a Scholarship Award and was in the Spanish Club. He graduated from Pleasant Hill High School in 1965. From 1965-1967 he attended Diablo Valley Junior College in Pleasant Hill and graduated with an A.A. He also received The Norseman Award Scholarship. From 1967 - 1969 he attended the University of California Berkeley and graduated with a B. A. in Slavic Languages and Literature. Tom joined the Air Force February 12,1970 and was honorably discharged September 27, 1973, after achieving the rank of Sgt. and receiving The Air Medal. Places of service: San Antonio, Tx, Monterey, CA, San Angelo, TX, Yokota Air Base, Tokyo, Japan, TDY several times to Korea, Kwangju, Seoul, Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, Japan. Tom met Thelma Espanto Mario at the Veterans Home in Yountville, CA, where they were both employed, and on May 24, 1975, they were married. They were married until her death on October 18, 2002. They had one daughter, Melissa. From 1984 - 1985 he attended Golden Gate University at Travis Air Force Base and received an MPA in Health Service Management. He worked 6 years for The Department of Veteran Affairs (Veterans Affairs Headquarters) in Sacramento as Staff Information Systems Analyst. He also worked for the Dept. of Developmental Services for the Developmental Centers Technology Section. He worked 22 years for The State of California Veterans Home as: Associate Programmer Analyst, Programmer, Office Manager, Management Service Tech, Office Assistant and Food Service Assistant, from which he retired. In 2007 Tom met his current wife, Sandra, while working for Jelly Belly part-time in Fairfield and they were married February 17, 2009. They had been married for almost 15 years. Tom loved traveling, playing golf, going camping; he liked going to plays and watching movies, going to the River Cats Baseball games, and being with family and friends. He had also taken flying lessons at Nut Tree Airport in Vacaville. Funeral services will be held at Bryan Braker Funeral Home, 1850 West Texas Street, Fairfield, CA with viewing at 10:00 a.m., funeral ceremony at 12:00 p.m., graveside service at 1:30 p.m., refreshments at 2:00 p.m., at Fairmont Memorial Park, 1901 Union Avenue, Fairfield, CA.
