Joan Elizabeth Osborn Bales, transitioned out of pain and suffering and to heaven and her Lord and her beloved husband, Carl Bales, at 2 AM Saturday morning, November 18th. Joanie was surrounded by family at the time and all through her last days. She was 89 years of age.

Joanie was a beloved friend to many, a Sunday School Teacher at First Federated Church for over 50 years, youth sponsor, mission trip sponsor, and active member with her friends in a ladies group that still gets together regularly.

Joan was born into a hard working struggling family at 1403 SE Harriett, next to the Des Moines River on the Southeast side, to Lena and Hugh Osborn. She was the youngest daughter as Hugh Jr was the oldest,now deceased, and her big sister Dena(Anderson), now deceased, her beautiful sister Katherine(Katy) Minks, now deceased, sweet sister Geraldine(Courtney), Geri, now deceased, and Calvin Osborn, last living sibling, and her youngest brother Ned Osborn Sr. Now deceased.

Joanie developed strong community connections and received lots of extra education and assistance at Roadside Settlement in Des Moines, Roadside Settlement House Project Des Moines . Joanie was a very smart and beautiful lady.

She likely met the love of her life there, Carl Lee Bales Sr. now deceased, joined him in marriage, as he joined the 82nd Airborne, which helped them both escape poverty.

Joanie had her first son, Carl Lee Bales Jr, Pete,(Becky)in 1953, David Craig Bales in 1955, and Andrew Joel Bales,(Bonnie)1958, and always provided for and loved and invested in their boys. Joanie and Carl were married for 60 years, before he passed away in 2009.

Joanie lived for her kids and grandkids and great grandkids.

Joanie's legacy of love will continue in her 3 sons, 2 daughters-in-law, 12 grandkids, and 26 great grandkids. We will dearly miss her. She was our treasure.
