Benjamin & Margaret (Magdalena) Steymets lived in New York, where he operated a carpenter and furniture business on or near Division Street. After the Battle of Long Island, the British took over New York, and the Steymets were driven from their home on three occasions. The last time they moved to Glen Gardner, NJ, where Margaret had relatives, and lived there until after the war. However, prior to their departure from New York, they had buried their silverware and other valuables in a large box in the back yard. These had been unnoticed by the British, and were recovered. The family remained in New York until Benjamin`s death in 1806, after which the widow returned to Glen Gardner to spend the remaining years with her daughter, Rachel Steymets Fritts, and her family.
