George Elmo Derriso was born near Soperton, in what was once Montgomery County, on July 21, 1904. The son of the late Noah and Leona Thigpen Deriso, he spent his early years working on his family's farm. In November, 1930, he moved to Bartow, Florida. George and his wife Georgia then returned to Soperton briefly in 1935 before moving to Montgomery, Alabama that year. There he sold candy and later worked for the WPA as a timekeeper. He moved back to Florida settling in Tampa in 1944 where he worked briefly in the Tampa shipyards. In 1946 he was employed by Jim Walter at his Dixie Building Supply Company building window frames for the Jim Walter Shell Homes. He was associated with Jim Walter fur four years. He then went into business for himself in 1950 supplying window frames to Jim Walter another ten years. He later worked as a night watchman for C. V. Burkhalter House Wrecking for 6 years before he retired in 1982. He died Saturday, September 3, 1994 at the age of 90 at his home. He was under the care of Hospice of Hillsborough.
There was a family debate regarding the spelling of the last name. George always spelled it Derriso. His wife, Georgia always spelled the name Deriso as George's parents did.
