James fought in the Civil War on the Union side as a Pvt in the 138th Regiment, Co E, Pennsylvania Infantry Volunteers. He enrolled on Aug. 29, 1862 in Schellsburg, PA. During the battle of Gettysburg in July 1-3, 1863, his unit was engaged at Harper's Ferry, WV. James was mustered out with his company on June 23, 1865 near Washington DC.
On Oct 28, 1870, he married Louisa Jane Smith at her parents' residence. They had 11 children.
Questions I would like help to answer:
~ WHO were his parents?
~ What did the S. stand for in his middle name? Several people have suggested that it was Silas but I have not come across a source/record of this.
