Served in the Vermont Army National Guard, as a Sergeant Gunner in the 124th Division of the Artillery Armament in Williston. Barry continued on to earn his rank as a Corporal and Marksman in 1958, and then a Sharpshooter in 1963, until an honorable discharge in 1965.
Married Eunice Jane Kinne on May 29, 1961 and they were the parents of 5 children
