Samuel (Sam) Sampson Chance is my granduncle. He is my Grandmother (Minnie Mae Chance Armistead) youngest brother. I don't have much information about "Grand Uncle Sam." Much of what I know is what I was able to collect from different sources online and interviews with my Aunts. I will create a short bio from these sources. Don Longfellow

----------------------- -------------------

Samuel (Sam) Sampson Chance was born 10 March 1899 in Sharp, Texas located in Milam County. His parents were Sam Chance and Rosealtha Ameila (Ercanbrack) Chance. Some online sources list that maybe he is a "Jr." since his father's name is Sam. I could not find any historical listings that his father's middle name was Sampson, but nonetheless, he may been referred to as "Jr" just because their first names were identical.

His Social Security Death Index indicates that he died 17 March 1993 in Yuba County, California. I find this odd because my research reveals that his last address was Loyalton, California which is located in Sierra County, California which is about 2 hours east of Yuba City and Yuba County. He may have been visiting relatives or traveling when he died. I could not find an obituary online, so my assumptions are that he may have been visiting in the area at the time of his death. Since I do not have access to his obituary, I also do not have knowledge if there was a burial or if he was cremated. For now, I have him listed as "Burial Details Unknown."

While he was born in Sharp, Texas. His mother (Rosealtha) apparently died when Sam was very young. Historical records are unclear exactly where and when his mother died, but it is believed she died between 1901 and 1904. His father would remarry two more times.

Review of records indicate that the family moved to Sulphur, Oklahoma (Indian Territory) about 1904 and later to the Roosevelt, Oklahoma area about 1906. Some records indicate the move to Roosevelt was 1907, but a marriage certificate for his father's 2nd marriage is dated 1906 and living in Snyder, Oklahoma (just south of Roosevelt, Oklahoma). Sam Sampson Chance spent most of his childhood in Roosevelt and attending school there.

The 1920 and 1930 Federal Census indicates the still lived at home with father and step-mother.

Sam married Lela Faye Armstrong late October 1933 in Roosvelt, Oklahoma. He was 34 years old and she was 17 years old.

Sam and Lela remained in Oklahoma at least through the 1950 Federal Census and his occupation is listed as "farmer."

I found a newspaper clipping that Sam and Lela were living in Loyalton, California in 1960. And it is possible that Sam was employed with the Unified School District there.

Sam was survived by his wife, Lela, daughter, Rose Marie and son, Gerald.

Again, I do not have access to his obituary, so I do not know if he was buried or cremated.
