George Henry Washburn was born in Oxbow NY on September 4, 1866, the son of Horace and Mary Jane Carpenter Washburn. She moved while young to Gouverneur and spent many years as a driver for Dr. W. J. Flint and Dr. Andrew Allen. He later became an employee of the A. S Whitney garage and was one of the first two automobile mechanics in Gouverneur.
He married Julia Ann Lachine, the daughter of Andrew and Lucy Jane Richardson Lachine, on September 2, 1866 and they lived together in the village for more than 57 years.
He was survived by four sons, three daughters, 15 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.
