BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. – Billy Frank Ellsworth, 64, 302 Garfield St., died at 12:36 a.m. Sunday at St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin, Mo., after an illness.
Mr. Ellsworth was born Feb. 4, 1926, at Henrietta, Okla.
He had lived in the Baxter Springs area most of his life.
He retired in 1989 after 40 years of service as a postal carrier for the Baxter Springs Post Office.
Formerly, he was employed as a sports writer for "The Tulsa World," "Baxter Citizen," "Pittsburg Sun" and "The Kansas City Star."
He was an Army veteran of World War II.
He was a member of First Christian Church, Magnolia Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and the AF and AM Lodge No. 71, all of Baxter Springs.
He was also a member of the Scottish Rite in Fort Scott, Mirza Temple in Pittsburg, and the Rural Letter Carriers Association.
He married Shirley Black on Aug. 7, 1953, at Columbus, Kan. She survives.
Also surviving are a son, Stacy Ellsworth, of the home; and a sister, Mabel Flowers, Springfield, Mo.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Derfelt's Baxter Chapel. The Rev. Jeff Blackman will officiate.
Burial will be in Baxter Cemetery.
Masonic and military rites will be conducted at the graveside.
Pallbearers will be Paul Buckner, Sonny McGreggor, George Clark, Jim Sparlin, Floyd Steele Jr. and Denny Deal.
