OBITUARY

Robert Dean Battani

July 12, 1939 - October 12, 2023
Born in Woodward, IA
Resided in Altoona, IA

Born in Woodward, Iowa on July 12, 1939, Robert Dean Battani was the oldest son of Geneva May Battani and Bruno Carlo Battani. He died on October 12, 2023 in Altoona surrounded by family. Bob was a good man of great discipline and full of love for all of his family and friends.

Bob graduated from Woodward High School in 1957. Shortly after he met the love of his life Judith (Judy) Ann Welter. Even after the first date, where Bob didn't say a word, Judy gave him another chance and they never looked back. Bob and Judy married in June of 1961 at Christ the King in Des Moines. The couple spent the first 12 years of the marriage on the Southside of Des Moines before moving out to Granger. They were graced with three sons who provided wonderful memories and kept them extremely busy throughout the years. Bob was an avid runner and could be seen throughout Granger on his after work runs.

Bob began working for John Deere shortly after high school in 1958. He worked there for 41 years. When he wasn't working, he was chasing around his three sons, and later on, six grandkids, and one great-grandson. Bob could be found at their sporting events, music concerts, and anything else they were involved in. The grandkids will always remember Bob as an ardent sports fan, cheering on his Cyclones. They will also remember his typical eye rolls whenever someone said something he thought was ridiculous. Bob could be seen throughout Des Moines with his personalized Iowa State "hoof" license plate. Bob and Judy enjoyed an occasional trip to one of their favorite places, Prairie Meadows, along with family and friends at their reserved Battani table. Bob could be found upstairs betting on horses, or playing craps on his favorite machine.

Bob was a devout Catholic who took his faith very seriously. He could always be found at Sunday mass. He shared his faith all the way to the end of his life. Bob was a loving family man, who leaves behind his wife, Judy of Altoona; his sons, Brian (Keely) of West Des Moines, Brad (Kate) of Johnston, and Blake (Beth) of West Des Moines; six grandchildren, Ross (Megs), Anthony (Lizzie), Ryan (Brett), Jacob, Mary Beth and Charlie; one great-grandson, Rory, his brothers Lanny and Ron. He is preceded in death by his parents Bruno Carlo and Geneva Mae, and his brother, David.

On Sunday, October 15, 2023, family will receive friends from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Ss. John and Paul Church. There will be a wake service at 6:00 PM.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, October 16, 2023 at 10:00 AM at Ss. John and Paul Catholic Church. Immediately following the Mass, a luncheon will be served. A burial at Beaver Catholic Cemetery in Granger, Iowa will follow.
