Professional Football Player. Walter Benton Garrison, a multi-talented sportsman, attended Lewisville High School near Denton, Texas, where he actively played football, basketball, and baseball. After graduating, Walter received a football scholarship from Oklahoma State University. In 1966, he was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the fifth round, 79th overall, during the NFL draft. He played his entire NFL career with the Cowboys, making 39 touchdowns and gaining 5,680 total yards in 119 games. Walter was a remarkable athlete, having played in the 1972 Pro Bowl and being a player on the championship team of Super Bowl VI in 1971. Additionally, he was a professional cowboy on the rodeo circuit during the off-season, making him a true cowboy at heart. A knee injury in an exhibition steer wrestling accident ended his pro football career in 1975. He was named to the Dallas Cowboys' 25th anniversary team, inducted into the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame and the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 2012. Walter also served in the United States Army in New Jersey and Fort Lewis and authored his biography titled "Once a Cowboy," which was a reference to his time in the rodeo and his football career.
