RIVERTON - Funeral services for Shoshoni resident Helen Joanna Weisz, 81,
will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at Davis Funeral Home in
Riverton by the Rev. Daniel Praeuner. Interment will be in Mountain View
Cemetery in Riverton.
She died Sept. 15, 2003, at Wyoming Medical Center in Casper.
Born Dec. 17, 1921, in Columbus, Mont., she was the fifth of nine children
of Diedrich Gerhard and Anna Maria Catharine (Wolderman) Luers; and moved
with her family to Midwest in 1922. They then moved to Riverton in 1929
and she graduated, with honors, from Riverton High School in 1939.
She attended the University of Wyoming from 1939 to 1941 and received her
teaching certificate in 1941. Her first job was in a one-room schoolhouse in Red
Canyon, south of Lander. While teaching, she met rancher Charles E. "Chuck"
Calvert. The couple was married in 1942. They continued to live in Red Canyon for a year until he entered the military during World War II. She worked in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and then at a munitions plant in Hawthorne, Nev., until his discharge in 1945. They returned to Riverton and lived there until 1958, when the family moved to
Shoshoni. Her husband preceded her in death in 1965, after 23 years of marriage. She
remained in Shoshoni and worked at the Golden Rule Store and for Shoshoni
School District.
In August 1968, she married H. Thomas "Tom" Weisz. After retiring from Shoshoni School District in 1986, she helped her husband manage Trail Town Supply until her death. An avid outdoorswoman, she loved to fish, camp, hunt and hike, especially
in the Cherry Creek area, near South Pass, with her grandchildren. Her hobbies included gardening, playing bridge, and being with her family. She was a member of the Lutheran faith and served as a precinct committeewoman for the Republican Party and an officer of the Shoshoni Chamber of Commerce. A former Girl Scout leader, she belonged to the Shoshoni Christmas and Extension clubs.
Survivors include her husband of 35 years of Shoshoni; two sons and their wives, Edward D. Calvert of Riverton and Eugene C. Calvert of Ukiah, Calif.; daughter, Betty Besson, and her husband of Cheyenne; stepson, Gary Weisz, and his wife of Shoshoni; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brother, Jim Luers, and his wife of Riverton; and a sister-in-law.
In addition to her first husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Anna Woodward and Mabel Luers; five brothers, Alfred, George, Gus, Frank and Ralph Luers; and three stepsons, Milton, Elliott and Dwight Weisz.
