James Allen Phillips was the first child of Rev. John Wesley Phillips, Sr. and Emily Welch Phillips. He married Cornelia Jane Brown. They had five children - Carson Phillips, Isa Eunice Phillips Beal, Roxie P. Asbil, Eppie P. Shoaf, and Clatie P. Wright. Census records record that Allen was a carriage maker. Something happened in 1884 because Allen and his wife both died (probably tuberculosis) and the children were raised by uncles and aunts. My grandmother was Isa P. Beal. She had the markers put down at their graves herself and a cousin still has the receipt. Allen's wife's marker incorrectly spells her name as "Carnelia" instead of Cornelia. My grandmother told me that an uncle and aunt raised her but I never thought to ask who they were. She died in 1960 when I was 14.
