Warren Joseph Is Said To Have Slain Harris Engle And Finley Bailey After They Murdered His Father and Wounded His Wife - Hazard, Ky., June 19
Three men are dead and a woman are wounded as a result of a gun battle this afternoon at 4 o'clock on Wooten's creek, Leslie county, seven miles from Hyden, the county seat. The dead: Will Joseph, Harris Engle and Finley Bailey. Mrs. Warren Joseph is suffering from a gunshot wound in her abdomen and Dr. R. L Collins, of Hazard, was summoned to attend her. It was reported here that Will Joseph, his son, Warren Joseph, and Warren's wife were on their way home from work in a cornfield when Engle and Balley approached them. There had been previous trouble between the principals.
It is not known who fired the first shot, but when the battle was over, WiIl Joseph, Bailey and Engle were dead and Mrs. Warren Joseph was seriously wounded. Warren Joseph is said to have killed Bailey and Engle with a shotgun after Will Joseph had been mortally wounded by either Balley or Engle.
Sheriff Sim Morris, of Hyden, was called to the scene and made an investigation. It was reported here that no arrests would be made until after funeral of the elder Joseph Saturday or Sunday.

Bailey (Branch) Cemetery is located at the end of Bailey's Branch Road in Wooton, Kentucky directly behind two RV/campers slightly uphill. On the right side is a path is stairs and on the left side is additional headstones.
