I remember a picture of my great-grandmother Hulda Derflinger that hung in my grandmother's guest bedroom. When I was small, I thought that the picture was of a priest because Hulda had a goiter and, wearing a high-collared black dress in the picture, the goiter looked like a priest's collar.
My grandmother told of a fire that totally devastated the family home when she was 12 or 13 years old. Everything was lost. She recalled standing outside and watching the fire and hearing the sounds of explosions coming from the basement ... jars of canned food exploding from the heat. How difficult that winter must have been.
My mother remembers that her Grandmother Hulda was an accomplished knitter who made gloves for her children and grandchildren. Some were knitted with a pattern of tiny blocks of different colors that were much admired.
Charles and Hulda died long before I was born so I missed meeting them. They are buried in a small family cemetery on the property where their home once stood.
