James - and presumably Letitia - immigrated to New Zealand in 1868 with James' brother William Henry and others (Saint John Morning Freeman, Sat 06 Jun 1868), but they returned later that same year:
Saint John Morning Telegraph, Thu 24 Dec 1868: "James MAXWELL, Charles P. BAKER and their families have returned from New Zealand to which place they emigrated in the spring. Only 2 of the 15 or 20 persons composing the party who went to New Zealand with the BAKERS and MAXWELLS have not returned, namely, Henry MAXWELL and Mr. STEVENS."
As of 1871 Letitia, James and their children were living in Saint John, but by 1881 they had moved to Fredericton.

Mill foreman by occupation.
