Humboldt friends and school mates learned with regret last week of the death of Gilbert Beard, who left this city several months ago to go to St. Louis. Relatives at this place had not heard from him for some months, and it was his expressed intention, upon leaving last June, to go to St. Louis and later to the Philippines where his brother was stationed with the US Army.

His mother was Mrs. Will Babcock, and she died in this city a couple of years ago, upon being brought here ill from South Dakota. Gilbert had attended school in Humboldt, and worked occasionally for the B & M railroad.

He was a victim of epilepsy and it was an attack of this kind which caused his death.

He had journeyed on south from St. Louis and was in Ft. Pierce, Florida, and among strangers. As near as can be learned he was found dead on the street in St. Pierce and the only means of identification was a souvenir post card in his pocket addressed to him and signed by a Humboldt young lady. Authorities cared for the body and buried the remains there, later writing a letter of explanation to the friend in Humboldt.

Gilbert has several relatives here, who were not aware of his whereabouts as this was not the first time he had journeyed over the country.
