Death of Mrs. Will O. Babcock

The death of Mrs. Will O. Babcock was received with regret throughout this community, where she had spent many years of useful life. Mrs. Babcock had been in poor health since last January, but the disease, yellow jaundice, baffled the skill of physicians and the loving care of friends, and she died at midnight Sunday after months of intense suffering.

For two years past Mrs. Babcock had resided in South Dakota and when it became evident to the sufferer that death was near at hand it was her wish that she be taken to her old home in Humboldt to await the final summons. Her request was gratified and Sunday she arrived in Humboldt accompanied by her husband and mother, Mrs. John Legg [Mary Ann Shields], the latter being called to her bedside several weeks ago. Mrs. Babcock was immediately conveyed to the home of her relative, Mrs. H.E. Hall in the north part of the city and twelve hours after her arrival, Death's Angel came to relieve her sufferings.

Flora C. Vanderveer was born January 22, 1861, in Fulton County, Illinois, at which place she resided until nine years of age, from there the family moved to Missouri where she spent a greater part of her life.

December 1, 1879, she was united in marriage to Allen Beard, and to this union were born three sons: Raymond, Clyde, and Gilbert Beard. Mr. Beard died a number of years ago.

February 15, 1906 she was married to Will O. Babcock. Soon after the marriage, they moved to McClure, South Dakota where she was residing when stricken with the fatal malady which ultimately resulted in her death.

She is survived by the three sons above mentioned, her mother, Mrs. Mary Legg, of Humboldt; a sister, Mrs. W.H. Till, of Shenandoah, IA; a brother O.W. Vanderveer of Lincoln; one half-brother, Walter Legg of Humboldt; and four half-sisters, Mrs. Al Gosart, of Phoenix, AZ; Mrs. Henry Voeller, of Table Rock; Mrs. H.E. Hall, of Humboldt; and Mrs. Ab Hews, of Humboldt.

Funeral services were held from the home of H.E. Hall Tuesday morning conducted by Rev. G.C. Aydelott, pastor of the Christian church. Interment was made in Humboldt Cemetery.

Former Humboldt Woman Dies Upon Her Return Home

Humboldt – Funeral services were held today at the Christian Church over the remains of the late Mrs. Flora Babcock who died Sunday, August 9, 1908, from cancer of the liver, after an illness of many months.

She was brought from her home near McClure, South Dakota, by her husband, W.O. Babcock, arriving here about noon Sunday, but the trip proved too much for her in her weakened condition and she never rallied.

The deceased was formerly a resident of Humboldt, having resided here during her girlhood days. She was the daughter of Mrs. Mary Ann (Shields) Legg of this city and the late CPL Edwin Vanderveer, who died in the Civil War.

She married Allen Beard in Humboldt, December 1, 1879. To this union were born two sons, Clyde William Beard and Raymond Beard. She later was married to Mr. W.O. Babcock on February 15, 1906, at Seneca, Nemaha County, Kansas. The couple departed soon thereafter for a claim in South Dakota, where they made their home. Mrs. Legg, also having a claim there, went to South Dakota with them.

Besides her mother and husband, deceased leaves two brothers and five sisters. Three sons also survive her, none of whom reside here at this time. She was in her forty-eighth year when death came. Interment was made in the cemetery west of the city.
