John Spelman/Spellman was born, John Spillane, circa 1819 in Cahir, (South) Tipperary, Ireland and the son of Mortimer Spillane and Bridget Keating.
John emigrated from Ireland and arrived at Castle Garden, New York port, on the 4th of July 1848 and it was at this point that the Spillane named changed to Spelman.
He married Bridget Ford and together they had five children: Ellen Catharine, Martin F., John Mortimer, William Henry & Thomas. They owned their home on Lawrence St., Hackensack, NJ.
John's exact death date is unknown at this time, my research indicates that by 1875 he was deceased. No death/burial record can be found, so it is not certain that John is interred at the Spellman family plot or whether he may have gone back to Ireland and died there.
