Mom passed away in Chilliwack on June 17, 2023. Mom was born in the Beemster, Netherlands. She was the third of nine children born to Bernard and Catherina Velzeboer. She is survived by her six boys, their spouses and grandchildren.
Mom immigrated to Canada shortly after marrying her husband Chris in 1965. They settled on the farm on Banford Road in Chilliwack, BC where they ran a successful dairy farm and raised their six sons. For many of her early years mom could be found tending to her award winning dahlia garden or driving her boys to/from hockey before/during/after farm chores. She was a common fixture in the Chilliwack Minor Hockey score keeping box for many years. Mom loved curling; she curled in both the Farmer and Ladies Curling Leagues. She enjoyed playing cards with her family and grandchildren and bartering at Flea Markets. Mom had a passion for travelling with the "Holy Land" being one of her highlights.
Mom was a spiritual woman who was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church for 58 years. When dad passed (1990), mom took it upon herself to drive her elderly church friends to and from church.
Mom was predeceased by her husband, Chris (1990), sister Jopie (1943) and brother Piet (2016).
Survived by brothers and sisters: Siem, Wim, Ben, Joke, Tini and Frans, all still in The Netherlands.
A mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday, July 13 at 11am at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 8909 Mary St., Chilliwack, with long time family friend Bishop Mark Hagemoen as celebrant.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the BC Heart and Stroke or Chilliwack General Hospital is much
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.hendersonsfunerals.com for the de Groot family.
