Charles J. Bateson was born in De Witt to Charles Wesley and Belle Sprague Bateson. He married Wilma Williams on April 4, 1946, in Chicago; she passed away on Oct. 15, 1969. Then he married Nellie Houston on April 16, 1977, in Weldon. She survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Charles and James;four daughters, Marla (Richard) Leuelling, Mary Burdett, Venita Penn and Lu Etta Garnet; three stepsons, Joseph Houston, Loren Houston and Davis Houston; fourteen grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-granddaughters; and one brother, Hugo.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, four sisters and one half sister.
A WORLD WAR II ARMY veteran, he was a member of American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts in Farmer City.
