Bill was born Feb. 16, 1924, in Havana, a son of William and Zora Peters Bates. He married Reba McWethy on May 23, 1948, in the Church of the Brethren, Champaign.
He graduated from Champaign High School in 1943. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, fighting in the Philippines.
He was employed by the City of Champaign Police Department retiring in 1973. He also worked for Feutz Contractors, Inc.
Survivors include his wife; a son, W. Keith (Autumn) Bates; a daughter Lou Ann (John) Duryea; five grandchildren and a sister Miriam "Mimi" (John) Markos.
He was a member of VFW Post 5520, Champaign.
