Sharlene Milbrey Cox was born April 14, 1921 in Shawnee, Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma, the only child of Charles Raymond Cox and Cora Ellen (Harbison) Cox. Her father worked in oil field service and her mother was a restaurant hostess. Sharlene graduated from Seminole High School and received and associate's degree from Seminole Junior College. She was the oldest to be honor with the school "Hall of Fame" Award.
After becoming friends in high school and sometimes double dating. Sharlene married Oliver Hammons on October 16, 1942 in Little Church, Virginia. They shared 57 years of marriage and were blessed with four daughters, seven grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
Sharlene was a wife, mother and homemaker, so she never really retired. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Seminole and in P.E.O. for 68 years. She enjoyed playing bridge and spending time with her grandchildren. She volunteered with Meals on Wheels, Chamber of Commerce and Seminole Hospital Board.
There were many memorable changes during Sharlene's lifetime. During the Great Depression of the 1930s and after, she remembers seeing signs posting bank closures in Overton, Texas. Bologna, bread and milk were frequent meals.
Sharlene Milbrey (Cox) Hammons was inducted into the CENTENARIANS OF OKLAHOMA HALL OF OKLAHOMA HALL OF FAME on the occasion of her 100ths birthday celebration. At that time she shared these words of wisdom with us. "Believe in God." "Take Care of Family, Be Honest, and Be a Good American Citizen." Sharlene's centenarian file will be sent to the Oklahoma Historical Society to become a permanent part of Oklahoma History.
