Funeral Service for Kay LaFaun (Crawford) Bursheim, Canté Wasté Win "Good Hearted Woman", 82 of Agency Village, SD will be held on Friday, July 28, 2023, at 11:00 A.M. at the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Tribal Community Center, Agency Village, SD with Rev. Danielle McKinney, JC Crawford CRE and Jamie German Episcopal Lay Reader. Pianist will be Billy Kohl and special music by Jackie Bird, Rogene Crawford and Rev. Daniell McKinney. Pallbearers will be Michael Selvage, Jarrod DuMarce, Kaedon DuMarce, John German III, Aaron Farmer, Tristan DeCora, Bearyn Skjonsberg and Derek LaPointe. Honorary Pall Bearers will be Diane & Don LaPointe, Harvey & Mona Renville, Mayvonne Crawford, Katie Kitto, Marcella Haug, Suzie Amos, Inez Crawford, Imogene Kitto, Lorraine German, Evelyn Eagle, Nita Kirk, Carol Adams, Sophronia Crawford, Deidra Keeble, Ida Ashes, Zelma Flute, Kaye Cahill and "All of Kay's Family & Friends". Interment will be in the Goodwill Presbyterian Cemetery, Agency Village, SD. There will be an all-night Wake Service on Thursday, July 27, 2023, at 7:00 P.M. at the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Tribal Community Center, Agency Village, SD. The Cahill Funeral Chapel, Inc. is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Kay LaFaun Crawford was born on October 31, 1940. Her parents were Edward James Crawford Sr. and Emily Jeanette (Kitto) Crawford. Kay was one of 15 children born to Edward and Jeanette. Kay was the 7th child of 10 brothers and 4 sisters. (Two siblings died in infancy.) Kay grew up in Old Agency, SD on their family homestead. Kay had a very industrious and fun childhood. Every year she was in charge of raising over 300 chickens and collecting their eggs for her family. She would also help in the garden and every year would help can thousands of jars of tomatoes. This helped feed her family throughout the winter. Kay also had a lot of fun with her siblings. As a child, Kay enjoyed going ice skating in the winter on the creek near their home. In the summer, her and her siblings would make home-made balls and bats and play baseball all summer. It was during her childhood years when Kay's father taught her how to play the piano on a pump organ. She enjoyed playing the piano and her talent came to bless many people for the next 70 years with her beautiful piano playing. Kay attended school in Peever, SD from K-12th. She enjoyed school and would later attend college. After high school graduation she met Steve Farmer, Sr. they married on November 26, 1960, in Sioux Falls, SD. From this union they were blessed with 7 children, Steve, Jr, Karen, Kevin, Stacy, Lisa, and Samuel Farmer, Sr. One child died in infancy, Leslie, and Kay never forgot her infant son. During this time Kay's young family moved to various communities where they served in the ministry of the church. On Feb 14, 1986, Kay was married the love her of life, Kenneth DuWayne Bursheim, Sr. in Pierre, SD. They remained happily married until his death in 2005. Kay supported her husband through many of his medical trials. They loved traveling together and would venture to places like Elvis's Graceland home in Tennessee. In later years, Kay enjoyed traveling with her family, as well. The spring of 2022 she made a trip to Yellowstone National Park with her son and grandchildren. Kay attended various colleges including Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD, Presentation College in Sioux Falls, SD and Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ. It is there that she earned her bachelor's degree in Education Administration. She used her degree throughout her life in many areas of education. She developed several Head Start programs in various communities. She served as Title IV director and JOM director for many years in the Sisseton School district. She also served as the Dean of Nebraska Indian Community College in Winnebago, NE. Kay also sat on various school boards throughout her career in education. She sat on Board of Directors for Circle of Nations Indian School, Flandreau Indian School Board of Directors and the Sisseton Wahpeton College Board of Directors. Her talents were served nationally when in 1998 she was elected as the National Indian Education Association Board President. She also served as SD Indian Education Association committee member for many years. Despite all her accomplishments in her career in education, her best service was to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Kay was steadfast in her faith. She served in various leadership roles in the Goodwill Presbyterian church all her life. She attended many church mission meetings in SD, MT and NE. Kay blessed so many families in their time of need by playing the piano for countless wakes and funerals throughout her 70 years of playing the piano. She loved all her Dakota songs from the Dakota hymn books and was always happy to serve. Her family described her as a woman of prayer, a woman who loved the Lord, and a woman who had immense faith. She read her bible and devotions daily. She always had a warm smile, hug and good words for everyone she met. Kay enjoyed many things in life; some of her favorites were playing bingo, buying lottery tickets always hoping she would win. She loved going thrifting and to rummage sales. She loved being with her family and attending their birthday parties, graduations, weddings, baby showers and dinners. She enjoyed traveling and going to her grandchildren's athletic games and cheering them on. She cherished her family. She loved her children and her grandchildren and granddaughters very much. Kay LaFaun Burshiem was loved deeply by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She knew how to make each loved one feel special. She had many nieces and nephews, friends, and hunka relatives that loved her very much, as well.

Kay is survived by her children, Steven ( Micheal) Farmer of Agency Village, SD, Kevin Farmer of Agency Village, SD, Stacy Farmer of Sioux Falls, SD, Lisa Farmer of Agency Village, SD and Samuel Farmer Sr. of Agency Village, SD; step children, Donna Bursheim of Agency Village, SD, Donita (Marshall) Goodsell of Sisseton, SD, DeVon Bursheim of Agency Village, SD and Kenneth Bursheim Jr. of Sisseton, SD; 39 grandchildren; many great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren and many nieces & nephews.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents, two husband, Steve Farmer Sr. and Kenneth Bursheim Sr.; one daughter, Karen Farmer and one infant son Leslie; two grandsons, David and Dallas Farmer; and her siblings, James Crawford, Iva Crawford, Bernita LaBelle, Edward Crawford Sr., Herbert Crawford, Samuel Crawford Sr., Joseph Crawford, Lyle Crawford, Lyman Crawford, and Edwane Crawford, Abigail Crawford, Liz Crawford, Edwin "Big Nick" Crawford, Harland "Terry" Crawford and two infant brothers.
