"Big Nick" Crawford Sr. was born to Edward J. and Jeanette (Kitto) Crawford on August 26, 1950 in Sisseton, South Dakota. Big Nick was the 11th son out of 17 children. He left to be with his parents, brothers, two sisters, son Jack, granddaughter and great grandson on February 3, 2017 after a long battle with liver cancer. Our dad started his education in Old Agency Day school, Peever and Browns Valley High School, He later obtained his GED. After his education, our dad moved to Fort Kipp, MT where he became a farm hand for Gayle and Lyda Menz. His love for basketball and softball lead him to many tournaments that he played in with his brothers and many friends he made throughout Montana, South Dakota and North Dakota. He met and married the love of his life, Glenda H. Bear on May 27, 1972 at the Red Eagle Memorial Church in Fort Kipp, MT. They both later attended and completed Vo-Tech School in Billings, MT. To their union they had 5 children: Jody Marie, Emma Leona, Edwin "Jack" Jr., Miranda Joy and Jack Wayne. Big Nick was honored to raise his oldest granddaughter Lil' Nikki Crawford and oldest great-grandson, Jorell Julian. He dedicated his later years in life caring for Jorell. When you would see our dad you were guaranteed to see Jorell with him. Our dad was our biggest fan in all his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren's sport activities. He was proud to teach us and share his abilities in basketball. While living in the Fort Peck area he worked as a law enforcement officer and later worked as a custodian/detention officer for the Brockton Public School. Also did bartending as a second job. He later moved back to Sisseton in 1992. Big Nick worked for all three casinos which included Dakota Sioux, Dakota Magic and then later retired from Dakota Connection Casino. In between the casino years our dad became a politician as he served as a District Representative and Council Rep. for the Old Agency District. He also served on the Elderly and School board for the Old Agency District. Our dad was baptized and joined the Goodwill Church. He was an active member of the Goodwill Presbyterian Church and served as a Trustee for many years. After his retirement he became a proud owner of the "Nick wood and lawn care service". He continued to teach his son and grandsons the trade of the business. He also loved to have get together or any type of function that included spending time with his family and friends. He shared stories of his childhood horses "Molly and Dolly" and also his dog "Jumbo" while taking care of his chickens and cows. He will be greatly missed by family and friends that he would call on a daily basis just to say hi or offer prayers. He was a loving and caring brother and raised a good family, his unselfishness and caring ways will be remembered.
