Irene was born on February 19, 1951 in Provo, Utah to Stephen Nelson and Florence Elizabeth Durrant Abbott. She grew up in Provo, Springville and Payson, Utah. When Irene was nine years old, her mother died, leaving Irene the only girl in a household of boys. She graduated from Payson High School and attended Utah Trade Technical College.
Irene married Merrill Franklin Thompson on January 25, 1974 in the Salt Lake Temple. They eventually settled in Clearfield, Utah where they spent the past 45 years. She was the mother of three daughters and two sons who loved her very much. She was a wonderful homemaker, an amazing cook and a talented seamstress. She created a fantastic childhood for each of her children.
Once her children were school-aged, Irene spent time volunteering and working in many different capacities at Doxey Elementary in Sunset, Utah until her retirement 24 years later. She loved working with children, particularly children with special needs. She had a caring and loving heart and enjoyed serving others.
Irene was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many callings in Primary, Young Womens and Relief Society. She also served as a den mother for the Cub Scouts. She was a wonderful example of Christlike service and compassion. She had many friends and touched the lives of countless individuals. She had a deep love for her family and will be greatly missed by them all.
She is preceded in death by her parents and stepmother Mazie Sheppard Shell Abbott; brothers Paul Abbott, Orland Abbott, Gary Abbott and Kenneth Abbott; daughter-in-law Katie Dixon Thompson; and grandson Jonathan Thompson.
Interment at Clinton City Cemetery.
