My mom, Roberta (Clinton) England, passed away on July 18, 2023, at the age of 98 one month shy of her 99th birthday. She was born August 20, 1924, in Elk Prairie Township near Ina, Illinois to Carl and Maude (Taylor) Clinton and grew up with her three brothers and three sisters during the Great Depression. As a young girl, she worked hard milking the cows and cooking while standing on a wood box that her brother, Melvin, made for her. She left home at age 14 to attend Ina High School and help care for her young Clinton cousins. Her strong work ethic was a constant throughout her life.

After graduating from high school in 1941, she moved to Sullivan, Illinois and met my dad, Charles England, as she walked by his Shell Gas Station to go to the post office. He thought she was so cute that he had to follow and meet her. They quickly eloped and married on August 24, 1941, in Old Monroe, Missouri. When Dad returned from World War II, they picked Lewistown, Illinois to permanently settle down.

When you hear the term "The Greatest Generation" you often think of the men who served in WWII, men like her beloved brothers James and Melvin Clinton, my dad, Charles England, and her brother-in-law, Boyce England. Mom was also a part of the Greatest Generation and provided loving support on the home front as a young mother during this time of sacrifice. She treasured all her correspondence with those who served.

Mom dedicated her life to being a fantastic wife and wonderful mother to her ten children. She managed her large family using her exceptional patience and kindness, never raising her voice to us. She was always there to listen and was a fixed point of love and integrity in our lives. She could also relate to any generation no matter the age difference as evidenced in her delightful interactions with the youngest members in her family.

Mom was an exceptional cook having done so from a very young age. When Mom and Dad opened the 6 Sisters Drive-In on North Main in Lewistown in the mid 1950s, she cooked everything from scratch. The family loved coming home to yummy treats after school and there were always big Sunday and holiday dinners. On Sundays after attending the Lewistown Episcopal church, everyone eagerly awaited Mom's turn when homemade cinnamon rolls would be served. For anyone who visited, she would make their requested favorite meal such as chicken and dumplings or potato soup.

Despite her large family Mom always made time for everyone. She provided support and love for her extended family. She was there to offer help to her neighbors. She will be remembered for her affable disposition and ability to talk up a storm.

Roberta is survived by her nine daughters, Sandi (late Gaza) O'Bryant, Diane (late Gary) Van Antwerp, Jane (late Denny) Gilson, Charla (Tom) Brown, Susan (Jim) Lindsey, Barb (Keith) Kittell, Debby (Chris) Juliusson, Lori Rosado, and Janet (Dan) Carr; fourteen grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; one brother, Tommy (Ann) Clinton; one sister-in-law, Shirley Thompson; one brother-in-law, Robert (Patti) England; and a large extended family.

She was preceded in death in 1999 by Charles, her husband of 57 years; her son, Boyce; five grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; two brothers; and three sisters.
