Elmer Saathoff was born at home on July 26, 1931, in Filley, Neb., to Alminia Fannie Carrie (Fordan) Saathoff and Rohlf Sueken Saathoff. He was baptized at home by the Rev. J.B. Reents on August 13, 1931.

He was confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church on March 30, 1947, by the Rev. John Streng. His verse was John 8:31-32; "If ye continue in my word then ye be my disciples indeed, and ye shall know the truth indeed; and the truth shall make you free."

Elmer attended Beatrice High School to the eighth grade. From November 14, 1951, to November 14, 1955, he served in the United States Air Force with 2 years at the Clark Air Force Base in the Philippine Islands.

After his release from the Air Force, he came home to Beatrice and married Norma Jean Nelson on January 28, 1956. Later in April of 2003, they were divorced. Elmer attended Milford Trade School, studying automotive body and fender while working for Walt Gall Body Shop and Lentz's Motor.

In 1964, Norma and Elmer purchased 10 acres of land north of Beatrice and started a salvage yard. Elmer started getting involved with racing everywhere. He officiated at many tracks, running demo derbies and figure 8 races at many county fairs.

Elmer passed away on July 24, 2013.

His survivors include his brothers, Clarence Saathoff (Virginia) of Beatrice, Neb. , Harlan Saathoff of Beatrice, Neb., and Billy Saathoff (LuAnn) of Beatrice, Neb.; sisters-in-law, Marilyn Saathoff and Bonnie Saathoff; ex-wife, Norma Jean of Beatrice, Neb.; daughter, Julia Ann Stake (Tracy) of Waverly, Neb.; son, Johnny "The Jet" Saathoff (Traci) of Beatrice, Neb., and grandchildren, Olivia Ann Kite (Tommy) of Hutchinson, Kan., Rachael Lynn Stake of Waverly, Neb.; Sierra Paige Saathoff and Jaxon Jett Saathoff, both of Beatrice, Neb.

Elmer was preceded in death by his father (2/19/1968), mother (3/8/1995), brothers, Renke (8/19/1925), Ralph (5/5/1981), Freddie (8/27/2002), Raymond (2/3/2003), LaVern (9/10/2009), and his sisters, Alminia (7/8/1968), Anna Betten (6/8/2000), and Arlene Winslow (3/21/1999).

There will be a Celebration of Life for Elmer Saathoff on August 30 at 3 p.m. at the Gage County Fairgrounds, Beatrice. Food and drinks will be provided. There will be a photo display. Elmer's friends may be welcome to share stories of Elmer. That evening, the Elmer Saathoff Memorial 21st Annual Nebraska State Championship Races will be held with racing to begin at 7:30 p.m. Jet Racing will be donating money on behalf of Elmer, for he loved racing and lived it all his life through family and friends.
