John James was the first white settler in Silver Creek Township. He chose Silver Creek because there was a catholic mission there that was converting Indians to catholism and John was a seriously Catholic Irishman. He died when my grandmother was five years old, but she remembered him speaking to her in Gaelic to her which she didn't understand, but she would nod her head yes or no to his questions anyway. Grandma always said that he lived to be 111 years old.
