Arthur was the son of John and Mary James and also the first husband of Edna Pearl (Townsend) James (Maxedon). Arthur and Edna had one child, Mary Irene James in 1902. Arthur was killed by lightening in 1913 when Mary was only 11 years old. Mary was my grandmother. She always blamed herself because Arthur had been wittling and left his knife in a tree stump, Mary found it and ran to give it to her father just before he went off to the Huckleberry marsh with his cousin. Mary always thought that the knife attracted the lightening and killed him, but in reality, the two men stood under a tall tree during a sudden storm and the lightening hit the tree. Mary missed him all her life (she lived to be 96 years old) she and her father had been very close and she told me her favorite thing to do was to "tag" after him. Arthur was the caretaker of the Sacred Heart church and cemetery. The family lived in a house provided by the church on the grounds. Mary used to tell me about how she played among the gravestones.
