Lavina Kirkland Farquhar was the daughter of Archibald and Mary Hannah Chaney Kirkland. She married Anderson Farquhar on December 4, 1828, and they were the parents of thirteen children, all believed born in Fayette County, Alabama. In early 1852, Anderson, Lavina, their children, Hugh and Harriet Farquhar McCoy, and Baley and Sarah Farquhar Traweek, moved to Texas where they chose homestead land in what became Burnet County. By the fall of 1853, they were getting settled in the area which later became known as the Sunny Lane community.

It was a daunting task in a virgin land, but Viny and her husband had experienced it before when they arrived as pioneers in Alabama. There were many homesick times in this new land which were reflected in letters to, and from, relatives. They had a comfortable life in Alabama and relatives were nearby, but they also carved out a comfortable life at their new home, and they had their family with them.
