Walter Benham, 93, of Bardstown, passed away at 12:10 a.m., Tuesday, May 2, 2016, at the V.A. Medical Center in Louisville. A native of Washington County, he was born on Oct. 23, 1922 to the late James Alfred and Katie Breeding Benham. He was a member of the Willisburg Church of God of Prophecy; a retired employee of the General Electric Company of Louisville and a Navy veteran of World War II.

Preceding him in death was his wife, Gladys Chesser Benham on Sept. 26, 1999, three sisters, Anna Mae Cheatham, Artie Strange and Maggie Thompson and five brothers, Charlie Lee Benham, J. Norris Benham, James A. Benham, Ira Benham and Fred Benham.

Survivors include, a son, Tim Benham (Hope) of Bardstown; two granddaughters, Emily Benham and Katie Swann (Eric); two step-granddaughters, Katherine Kuhl and Emma Kuhl and five great-grandchildren, Eric Swann, Jr., Abel and Aiden Swann, Jordan Jones and Jorgia Benham.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Thursday, May 5, at the Willisburg Church of God of Prophecy with Rev. Ron Ferrell and Rev. Keith Creech, officiating. Burial was in the Highland Memory Gardens at Mt. Washington where the Marion County Veterans Honor Guard conducted military rites. Serving as pallbearers were Eric Swann, Todd Thompson, Stevie Thompson and Dan Chesser. Carey & Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
