Gustave Adolph Spengler was born on November 25, 1844, in Thurgau, Switzerland, his father, Rev. John Henry Spangler, was 42 and his mother, Louise Hanhart, was 32. He married Caroline Chalsma on July 3, 1873, in La Crosse, Wisconsin. They had 11 children in 25 years. He died on December 15, 1924, in Holmen, Wisconsin, at the age of 80.
